Choosing sunscreen for Lebanon's sun: a pharmacist's guide
We get roughly 300 sunny days a year and a sea that doubles the exposure. Here's how to pick a sunscreen you'll actually wear — and use it so it works.
Why this matters more in Beirut
Lebanon sits at a latitude where UV index regularly hits 9–10 from May through September — "very high" on the WHO scale. Add reflection off the Mediterranean (water reflects up to 25% of UV) and the Corniche habit of walking at midday, and skin here takes a serious annual dose. UV exposure is the main driver of premature skin aging and the biggest modifiable risk factor for skin cancer. Sunscreen is not a cosmetic; it's the cheapest anti-aging and cancer-prevention product in the pharmacy.
Decoding the label in 60 seconds
- SPF (30, 50, 50+) measures protection against UVB — the burning rays. SPF 30 blocks ~97%, SPF 50 ~98%. In our sun, we recommend SPF 50+ for faces, fair skin, children and beach days; SPF 30 is a reasonable floor for daily city use.
- UVA logo (circled "UVA") or PA+++ means the product also guards against UVA — the aging rays that penetrate glass and clouds. Never buy a sunscreen without UVA protection.
- "Water resistant" means it survives 40–80 minutes of swimming — not an afternoon. Reapply after every swim and towel-dry.
Mineral or chemical filters?
Chemical filters (the modern European ones — Mexoryl, Tinosorb) are light, invisible and very effective; they're what make French pharmacy sunscreens pleasant to wear. Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on the skin's surface and suit very sensitive, allergy-prone or post-procedure skin, and young children. Many of the best formulas now blend both.
On our shelves, the references we reach for most: La Roche-Posay Anthelios (the dermatologist's default, superb UVA cover), Vichy Capital Soleil (great textures for combination skin), Neutrogena (dependable protection at friendly prices), Beesline (natural Lebanese sun care) and A-Derma Protect (gentle on fragile and children's skin).
The texture rule: the best sunscreen is the one you'll reapply
In August humidity, a heavy cream ends up in a drawer by June. Match texture to your skin and life:
| You are… | Ask us for… |
|---|---|
| Oily or acne-prone | Ultra-light fluid or gel, "dry touch" / non-comedogenic |
| Dry or over 50 | Cream textures with added hydration |
| Wearing makeup | Fluid under makeup + SPF spray or compact for top-ups |
| A swimmer / runner | Sport formulations, water resistant, sweat-proof |
| Buying for kids | Children's ranges — mineral or gentle chemical, SPF 50+ |
How much, how often — where everyone goes wrong
- Amount: a full teaspoon for face and neck (the "two finger lengths" rule), a shot-glass worth for the body. Most people apply a quarter of that — which quietly turns SPF 50 into SPF 15.
- Timing: apply 15–20 minutes before going out.
- Reapplication: every 2 hours in direct sun, and after every swim. Yes, even the "once-a-day" products — that claim assumes laboratory conditions your beach day will not provide.
- Don't forget: ears, back of the neck, tops of feet, and the parting in your hair (a cap works too).
Beyond the bottle
Sunscreen is one layer of sun sense, not the whole strategy: shade between 11am and 3pm, sunglasses with UV filter, and a hat beat any SPF number. And after a long sun day, a good after-sun or barrier-repair moisturizer (we like the thermal-water ones) helps skin recover.
